Our History

The history of Port Royal, South Carolina, is a captivating Lowcountry tale defined by its deep
natural harbor, centuries of geopolitical tug-of-war, a groundbreaking Civil War era, and
economic resilience. Known for having seven flags fly over its territory – French, Spanish,
English, Scottish, Confederate, United States, and South Carolina – the town's history predates
Jamestown by decades.
